TY PARKS AND GARDENS: AN ECOLOGICAL RESOURCE FOR THE CITY

The environmental protection is a widely shared issue by the public opinion, the production world and public authorities. Besides the global topics concerning the protection of resources at an international level, more and more care is devoted to the everyday environment such as the city. In effect, the quality of life in cities is threatened by several pollution sources, noise, traffic, and it is often impossible to find viable solutions in time and with costs that can be supported by the local authorities or the individual citizen.

One of the decisive elements for the improvement of the quality of life in cities is undoubtedly represented by city parks and gardens, along with the trees along the streets. These are more than simple elements of street furniture, they are an ecological resource that is still little known and exploited. Along with esthetical and psychological functions – which we can all experience while walking in a park – the city vegetation has remarkable effects on the removal of dust and gas polluters, it improves the microclimate both by the shade and the release of significant amounts of vapour, it reduces the noise and protects the soil.

All the functions that city parks and gardens perform highly repay for the costs of their ordinary and extraordinary maintenance. In spite of all that, the economic resources devoted to the maintenance and the increase in city parks, gardens and street trees are generally deficient as compared to the real needs. An immediate opportunity to face this situation is to use the few resources available at best, by increasing their efficiency and efficacy.
